Twitter is one of the fastest growing social networking sites around, clocking in at about 200 million users. The platform also ranks as one of the top ten most visited websites in the world. Further, as weâve seen with recent world events, Twitter is one of the number one ways to gain news fast.
In laymanâs terms, itâs the networking site to be using if you want to get noticed. Twitter can do wonders for your job search, as well as your personal brand, if you use it for good. Here are three ways to show off your Twitter skills:
Clearly identify your brand. Like most social networking sites, Twitter is about who you are and what you can bring to the online table. Clearly identify yourself and your brand by completing your bio, including a fitting profile picture, making sure to include your industry, interests, if youâre looking for a job, and/or links to your other sites. That way, when people are searching for a specific user, candidate, or thought leader, you will be in the running.
Twitter chats. Twitter chats are industry discussions held on the site by way of a special chat hash tag. For example, #careerchat occurs every Tuesday and discussions range from how to get a job to how to improve your online presence. Why is participating in Twitter chats important, though? Well, you not only get your name out there, but also demonstrate your knowledge for any given topic. Further, you get to network with industry leaders, which could be the link you need to achieve your goals. For a full list of Twitter chats, refer to this spreadsheet.
Use hashtags (#). As with the last point, hashtags can be extremely beneficial if you use them correctly. Especially when tweeting about a hot topic, make sure to use relevant hashtags so you can easily connect with other users. The use of Twitter hashtags goes beyond just participating in discussions though. They show that you are well informed and can formulate your own opinion regarding the matter.
Help others. As weâve said in the past, itâs not always about you. Sure, itâs easy to be focused on your own needs when using social networking sites, but thatâs not what theyâre about. Platforms like Twitter are designed to start a conversation, even if youâre only using 140 characters per tweet.
So, once in a while, think about helping others with their needs, be it a job search or promoting an event. You not only assist others with their cause, but also improve your personal brand. After all, everyone likes a giver. Make sure you take the time to be on the opposite side of the spectrum.
